Nurturing children is one of the most rewarding experiences anyone can have. It's exciting to witness how a newborn learns to recognize objects and sounds, or how an infant comes to bond to those who love and care for him. It's exhilarating to share in the growth and development of a young child, helping them make connections so that life's puzzles begin to fall into place for them. Because caring for children is one of the most important and demanding jobs anyone can have -- ask any parent -- being a nanny is an ideal way to distinguish yourself in this competitive world.

Maybe you thought being a nanny was a dead-end job … well think again! Being a nanny could be one of the most important positions you ever take. You are the one responsible for the well being of someone else's children. You are the one parents count on and trust to help raise their children. Depending on the child's age, you will be responsible for keeping their schedules, organizing their days, taking them to the doctor, or getting them to their piano and dance lessons on time. You're also the one who will play goalie when they practice soccer, and retrieve the ball when they practice foul shooting. You may assume the role of an educator, a mediator, and a philosopher. You need to be understanding and empathic, while at the same time being able to maintain authority. Sometimes you have to be downright inventive, or an engineer who helps assemble toys. You will be both a playmate and a disciplinarian. That's what being a caregiver is all about.

In order to be a nanny you have to be organized, creative, understanding, nurturing, patient, reliable, and levelheaded. You have to be able to handle adversity and ready to make quick decisions. You have to be a tower of strength and a well of comfort.

Most of the virtues mentioned here are innate in every nanny. The job merely brings out the best in you. But there are even more rewards to being a nanny that will help in your future endeavors.

Think about the people you'll meet. The parents are most often highly educated, successes in their chosen fields. You may work for doctors, lawyers, judges, or business people from every walk of life. You can't help but acquire skills living around them. And don't forget the travel that comes with being a nanny. Most often, you'll being living in another part of the United States, so you get to see more of our great country. You learn how other people live firsthand, and sometimes their cultures are different than yours. Now that's enriching!

When you sum it up, being a nanny is a perfect way to grow as a person. You get to travel, be with interesting people, and best of all, learn more about yourself through your experiences with children. Those are pretty powerful items to list on any résumé.

As a career, being a nanny is reward enough. But it has other advantages. It can give you needed experience when applying to graduate school in child psychology, social work, or counseling. Working with children on a one-to-one basis, gives nannies an advantage prior to any career involving children, from being a teacher to opening your own daycare center.

But don't get the idea that being a nanny is only a one-year experience. Many nannies choose to make this profession their career. They not only get to do something they love and enjoy, but are also able to establish their financial independence. What other job pays for your room and board, provides use of a car, while at the same time allows you to save enough money to help pay off school loans or save for graduate school?

Being a nanny ... is a winning career move!
